Receiving a bonded grinding wheel is only the first step of a long service life. The real starting point is the inspection you perform the moment the crate or carton is opened. A few minutes of careful checking protect your operators, your machine tools and your production schedule — and they also decide whether a delivery claim can still be filed with the supplier.
Grinding wheels are brittle, high-speed rotating tools. Damage that looks minor on the outside — a chipped edge on the working layer, a bruised mounting hole or a transport knock on the base — can develop into an out-of-balance wheel, vibration, loss of abrasive grain or, in the worst case, wheel breakage during operation. Transport incidents are the most common source of this kind of hidden damage, and most suppliers require notification within a short window after delivery. Inspection immediately after unboxing is therefore both a safety measure and a commercial safeguard.
Work through the following checklist before the wheel is mounted on any machine. Photograph each item as you go, so that if a problem is found the evidence is already available.
| No. | Inspection Point | What to Look For |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Wheel base / core | Visible knocks, dents, chipped corners or deformation on the base body |
| 2 | Working layer edge | Abnormal notches, chipping or ragged edges along the abrasive rim |
| 3 | Working layer bond | Local separation, lifting or partial loss of the abrasive segment |
| 4 | Mounting hole and locating features | Damage, burrs, ovality or scoring on the bore and positioning areas |
| 5 | Product surface | Impact marks or bruises caused during transport |
| 6 | Non-standard geometry | Profile, dimensions and segment layout consistent with the drawing or approved sample |
If you observe clear cracks, structural damage, abnormal separation of the working layer, or anything else that may affect safe use, do not mount the wheel and do not run a trial grind. Stop the process, keep the wheel in its packaging, record the finding with photos and contact the supplier for confirmation. Mounting a suspect wheel "just to test it" is never worth the risk: at operating speed, a damaged bonded wheel can fail without warning.
Consistent inspection is a low-cost habit with a high return: fewer rejected parts, fewer machine stoppages and a documented quality baseline for every shipment. Suppliers who provide clear inspection guidance together with their wheels make that habit much easier to maintain — and our technical team is available to support customers with drawing confirmation, inspection criteria and application advice for both standard and non-standard grinding wheels.
