When specifying or evaluating a diamond grinding wheel, it is tempting to focus on a single number — the thickness or the width of the diamond layer. In practice, however, the performance of the working layer is never determined by one dimension alone. It is the result of how the layer is built on the inside: its abrasive content and the way that content is held together and supported. Two wheels with identical outer dimensions can behave completely differently once they touch the workpiece.
Understanding which internal factors matter — and how they interact — is the key to selecting a wheel that cuts efficiently, holds its form, and delivers a long, predictable service life.
In real grinding operations, the following factors deserve close attention because they jointly govern how the diamond grains behave:
These variables do not act in isolation. Together they determine the state of each abrasive grain throughout the grinding process:
| Grain state | What it means | Main influencing factors |
|---|---|---|
| Cutting | The grain is sharp and actively removes material | Abrasive type, grit, concentration, bond retention |
| Retention | The grain stays firmly held while cutting | Bond type and retention, layer structure |
| Self-sharpening | Dull grains fracture or release to expose fresh edges | Bond retention, grain strength, concentration |
| Pull-out | Spent grains are released from the layer | Bond retention, layer–core relationship |
When these elements are well matched, the layer self-sharpens in a controlled way: grains stay sharp, cut steadily, and are released only when they are worn out. When they are mismatched, the results are predictable failures — glazing and loading when the bond holds grains too tightly, or premature grain loss and rapid wear when it holds them too loosely.
In short, the working layer of a diamond grinding wheel is a carefully balanced system. Abrasive type, grain size, concentration, bond, thickness, width, structure and the layer-to-core relationship all pull on the same outcome: how the diamond grains cut, hold, self-sharpen and release. Get these factors working together, and the wheel will grind faster, cooler and longer.
